Green Acres Chocolate Farm
“It’s a strange story, but that’s how all great stories begin. My path collided with the sweetest, funniest, most personable man, during a two day puppy rescue mission in the deep rainforest surrounding our overwater bungalow, in the middle of nowhere in Bocas Del Toro, Panama. We hiked for days through the rainstorms, our boots covered in mud, and arms sore from kayaking to every corner of the rainforest. All to find a lost puppy, born just a few days ago, and would not be able to survive without his mother. Gary was almost in tears by the nightfall, certain that the pup would not make it through the night. By luck and persistence, we looked onwards through the night until sunrise when we heard the mother call out to her puppy from our kayak and a soft whimper echoed in response. There was not a single dry eye that day and Gary and I instantly became the best of friends! He is a kind soul that the world needs to know.”
Gary’s Story
Gary grew up in the United States, with a huge interest in conservation science and protecting our precious earth. He started from scratch after buying a plot of land in Bocas and began to plant his own botanical garden, with the help and support of the local people who lived on this land and became family to him.
He is incredibly knowledgeable about the area, agricultural best practices, local flora and fauna, and the local people on the island. He is passionate about the environment and cares deeply about climate changes and ways we can all practice better ways to reverse the climate disaster we are headed towards by doing our share. Just talk about the almendra trees and you will immediately see Gary’s eyes light up and go on for hours about its importance. He provides internship opportunities and free housing for students who are interested in pursuing an education in environmental science.
Green Acres is one of the most beautiful Natural Preserves in Bocas Del Toro. Nested on the shore of Dolphin Bay. Gary offers 2 hour tours through the lush tropical rainforests, his beautiful botanical gardens, and a vast Cacao Plantation to learn more about this hidden paradise. Wildlife is abundant on these 30 acres of paradise. Monkeys, toucans, sloths, poison dart frogs, tropical butterflies, and a variety of birds are often seen. During the tour, you will also see how Cacao is grown, dried, roasted, and turned into 100% organic chocolate. Delicious samiles (including chocolate rum) are provided.
